The United Nations temporarily suspended the delivery of humanitarian aid in Haiti due to the inability to access the port and the airport in the capital as a consequence of the deteriorating security in the region.
The Haitian government closed Toussaint Louverture airport after a Spirit Airlines plane was shot at while landing in Port-au-Prince. The flight had to be diverted to the Dominican city of Santiago. Subsequently, another airline, JetBlue, reported an attack on one of its aircraft.
The situation is complicated by the closure of the airport until November 18, and the access limitations to the city’s port. Although it remains open for navigation, it is closed for land access, explained the UN spokesperson.
The suspension of humanitarian flights has prevented the transport of twenty trucks with medications and critical supplies to the south of the country. The UN is now considering the possibility of conducting its aerial operations from an airport located in northern Haiti.
Furthermore, UN agencies have been forced to halt cash transfers to thousands of people due to the increasing activity of armed gangs, which has created an unsafe environment for this type of operations.
