A Kenyan officer belonging to the Multinational Security Support Force in Haiti (MSS) died during a joint operation with the Haitian National Police (PNH) against armed gangs, according to reports from international media.
The officer was injured during an operation carried out by units of the Haitian National Police, including the Motorized Intervention Brigade (BIM) and the Temporary Anti-Gang Unit (UTAG), with the support of the MSS, at the base of armed groups in Pont Sonde.
In response to insecurity, this Sunday, numerous people protested in various neighborhoods of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, such as Canapé-Vert, Fort National, and Turgeau, according to information released by the site dw.
The increase in violence in Haiti has left a tragic toll in 2024, with at least 5,601 people killed by criminal gangs, a significant increase compared to the previous year, according to verified data from the United Nations Office for Human Rights.
Additionally, 2,212 people were injured and 1,494 were kidnapped, according to reports from the same office based in Geneva. There have also been reports of lynchings of alleged gang members by civilians, and the deaths of two of these individuals have been confirmed.
In October 2024, more than 70 people were killed in a massacre perpetrated by the Grand Griff armed group in Savien, located in the Pont Sonde area. The Kenyan officer was injured in Pont Sonde, in the municipality of Saint-Marc, Artibonite department, and died in the hospital as a result of the injuries.
The MSS reported the tragic loss of the officer without revealing his identity. This is the first casualty of the MSS since the mission was deployed last June to assist Haiti in its fight against violence imposed by armed gangs, which control 80% of the capital of this impoverished Caribbean country.
