In the commune of Kenscoff in Haiti, an attack carried out by armed gangs has left at least forty people dead, including about twenty civilians. Among the victims are defenseless residents, such as Judite Sauveur, 25, who recounted being forced to sleep in the street with her children after her house in the Bellot neighborhood was burned during the violence.
According to Sauveur, multiple deaths were recorded in her neighborhood, and several injured individuals were urgently transported to the hospital. Some victims were killed while working in the fields of the suburban commune. Jackson Déus, 31, who has not yet been able to return home since the attack, expressed his concern over their difficult situation, urging authorities to send reinforcements to combat the armed gangs.
The gangs from the commune of Carrefour, south of the Haitian capital, attacked several localities in Kenscoff, such as Bellot, Goder, and Le Montcel, with the aim of taking control of the Petion-Ville territory. Some people were killed inside their own homes, causing dismay among local residents.
Amid the violence, the Haitian National Police responded to the attack, resulting in the deaths of at least twenty members of the armed gangs. However, the civilian population has suffered devastating losses, with at least twenty confirmed civilian fatalities. Dozens of homes have been burned, and many families have lost several members in the tragic incident.
Resident Vanicia Anéus, 50, shared her heartbreaking story, mourning the loss of several loved ones in the attack, including eight family members. Haitian authorities have deployed police forces in Kenscoff to address the situation, while the displaced have sought refuge in the town hall or are stranded in the streets, facing a heartbreaking and uncertain reality.
